Dear Mr. Cyr,

Your enquiry regarding our holdings of artifacts relating to the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish and other related units has been forwarded to me for response. We do have a number of items relating to these units, the majority of which are insignia and medal sets, a few of which are on display in our permanent galleries.

The items on display in Gallery 2, South Africa and the First World War, are:

19920236-001.1; a push dagger. This item is associated with a member of the 21st Battalion, CEF.
19720102-056; a Brodie helmet. This helmet is associated with Victoria Cross recipient Thain MacDowell, a member of the 38th Battalion, CEF.

There are also several artifacts on display in Gallery 5, The Royal Canadian Legion Hall of Honour:

20010037-005: a medal set awarded to Private Theophilus Henry Oliver of the 2nd Battalion, CEF. The medal set consists of the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal.
20010037-006; The Memorial Cross associated with Private Theophilus Henry Oliver. Oliver went missing during the Second Battle of Ypres on 22 April 1915, and is presumed to have died that day.
20090121-001; The Victoria Cross medal set awarded to Corporal Lionel (Leo) Clark, who, like Oliver, was a member of the 2nd Bn. The set consists of the Victoria Cross, the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. This is one of the “Valour Road” VCs.

The remaining material that is not on display consists primarily of uniform insignia (ie. cap and collar badges) as well as medal sets awarded to servicepeople associated with the units you listed. We do have an online searchable artifact catalogue where you can look for items in the collection: Search the Collection | Canadian War Museum

We also have a medals-specific online exhibit/ database where you can search for medal sets in our collection. Currently this project features First World War medal sets, but it is an ongoing project and will continue to grow in the future: Medals from the Tilston Memorial Collection of Canadian Military Medals | Canadian War Museum

Images of any artifact in our collection can also be ordered through our Image Reproduction Services. You can learn more about this service here: https://www.warmuseum.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Brochure_concept_5.pdf .

Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate weekend visits to view artifacts that are not on display. Appointments can be made for small groups during regular business hours if there are specific items you would like to view.

Thank you for your interest in the Canadian War Museum, I hope you have a wonderful visit next month!

Sincerely,

Arlene Doucette
